For Native Americans seeking recovery, healing is more than overcoming addiction. It’s a spiritual and cultural journey. At Aliya Native American Program, we honor the teachings of the Red Road to Wellbriety. This is a guiding path inspired by the White Bison’s Wellbriety Movement. The movement has helped countless indigenous people rediscover strength, purpose, and balance in life.  This is done through traditional values, cultural practices, and community connection.

Our treatment center integrates Native teachings with research-based therapies in our programs. This is to support people in recovery on their red road journey toward wellness, sobriety, and spiritual renewal.

What Is the Red Road to Wellbriety?

The Red Road to Wellbriety is rooted in the teachings of the White Bison’s Wellbriety Movement. The movement began as a grassroots effort to bring hope and healing to Native people struggling with addiction. Founded by White Bison, Inc., this movement connects the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12-step programs with Native American culture, ceremonies, and spiritual traditions.

The term “Wellbriety” combines wellness and sobriety, reflecting a holistic vision of sobriety recovery—not just freedom from alcohol and drugs, but emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual healing for Native Americans and indigenous people everywhere.

The Wellbriety Movement: Healing for Native Americans

The Wellbriety Movement reminds us that true recovery means returning to balance with ourselves, our families, and our communities. Guided by Medicine Wheel teachings, the Red Road promotes values like honesty, humility, respect, and compassion.

At Aliya Native American Program, we follow these principles to create a safe and culturally grounded space for healing for Native Americans. Our treatment program blends modern behavioral health care with Native American culture, including traditional healing practices such as:

  • Talking Circles and Storytelling

  • Sweat Lodges and Smudging Ceremonies

  • Elder Guidance and Prayer

  • Medicine Wheel Integration

  • Meditations with Native American teachings

These practices help restore spiritual connection and balance, empowering individuals to walk their Red Road journey with strength and purpose.

The Connection Between Wellbriety and 12-Step Programs

While the Wellbriety Movement embraces the wisdom of Alcoholics Anonymous and other step programs, it adapts them for Native Americans seeking recovery by infusing them with cultural and spiritual meaning.

The Wellbriety approach encourages participants to work through the 12 Steps using Wellbriety Books such as The Medicine Wheel and 12 Steps, written specifically for Native people. These teachings promote not only sobriety recovery but also healing from intergenerational trauma, historical loss, and emotional pain.

At Aliya, we help patients explore these lessons through both traditional step work and culturally informed therapy sessions—combining ancestral wisdom with clinical care.

Living Well and Walking the Red Road

To walk the Red Road is to live a life of balance and integrity—to honor the Creator, the Earth, and all living beings. The Red Road teaches that recovery is not a single destination but a lifelong journey of hope, growth, and spiritual discovery.

For indigenous people and Native Americans seeking recovery, this path offers a deep reconnection to identity and purpose. It’s about healing wounds from the past and learning to walk in wellness, sobriety, and gratitude each day.
