Sound therapy is a time-honored healing practice rooted in ancient traditions, including Aboriginal and Indigenous cultures. Today, it is recognized as an research-based alternative therapy used to support holistic healing across mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health.

Sometimes called sound wave therapy, sound healing, or sound bath therapy, this practice uses specific frequencies, vibrations, and rhythms to bring the body and mind into balance. At Aliya Native Americans, we offer sound therapy as part of our integrative recovery program—designed to meet the unique needs of Native American individuals and communities.

What Is Sound Therapy?

At its core, sound therapy is a holistic healing practice that uses sound, music, and vibration to help individuals restore wellness across all levels of the self. More than just relaxation, it encourages self-reflection, inner alignment, and deep healing. By combining sounds, music, vibrations, and frequencies with personal reflection, individuals engage in the process of “wholing” themselves. Essentially, any imbalance of unwellness in some part of the self, whether the body, mind, or spirit, leads to overall decreased wellbeing. That’s why holistic healing focuses on each part of the self to bring whole wellness to the entire being. You can think of “wholing” as another term for healing that means touching all elements of what makes you human. This holistic mentality is also present in Native American cultures. There is interconnectedness in the human world and natural world just as there is connection between all parts of a person.

Holistic Healing in Recovery

We offer sound therapy as one of the holistic therapies at Aliya Native Americans. It can be conducted in a therapeutic setting with a sound healing counselor who leads you through guided meditation and reflection. They will use a wide array of sound healing tools and instruments to create an ambient atmosphere of recovery. In addition to sound therapy, we offer a diverse category of holistic healing practices for our guests to enjoy. These are intentionally chosen alternative healing techniques that target multiple elements of wellness. For example, yoga is a holistic therapy because it offers physical, mental, and spiritual benefits.

The core approach of Aliya Health Care is integrative healing. In sum, this is a proven combination of traditional psychotherapy (like behavioral therapy) with holistic therapy (like sound therapy and many others). All of our guests work through personal service plans that combine traditional counseling with various alternative activities.

How Does Sound Therapy Help Native Americans?

Sound therapy is an effective healing method for a wide range of people, regardless of their health concern. Holistic wellness benefits those with physical ailments, mental health disorders, behavioral challenges, and substance abuse addictions. It can also strike a poignant chord in those with a legacy of pain and trauma, like Native Americans.

For one thing, each of the above concerns are present in Native American communities, with substance abuse and mental illness statistics higher than the National average. Many people in the Indigenous community have a great need for personal and community healing. Undeniably, there are generational challenges still impacting American Indians, like racism, poverty, substance abuse, trauma, and lack of access to care. As a result, many live in a pattern of unwellness that affects their mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual health. Sound therapy offers tools to bring deep restoration and future coping skills.

How Does Sound Therapy Work?

There are a few key elements that contribute to the process of sound therapy that are also the reason it benefits individuals. Sound healing therapists facilitate sound therapy sessions and play sound-based music with high-intensity, varying frequencies. The vibrations and sound waves have deep physical and mental impacts, offering a unique way to touch the person to bring about breakthrough. To elaborate, this process is called resonance and it refers to how the body’s cells both absorb and channel the acoustic waves throughout the body. Although it can’t be directly felt, the body is essentially massaged by the vibrations, leading to relaxation, circulation, and regulation. While the healing sound frequencies are penetrating at a molecular level, the sound therapist guides session attendees through reflection and meditation that engages their mind and emotions.

Notably, sound vibration therapy is conducted between a therapist and an individual or a group.

Sound Therapy Instruments

To create the results of layered vibrations, sound waves, and frequencies, sound therapists use multiple sound healing instruments. Combined, they create a sound bath that washes over individuals to place them in a deep, relaxed state. Some of the instruments you may encounter during a session are:

  • Aboriginal digeridoo
  • Drums
  • Chimes
  • Clapsticks
  • Bells
  • Flutes
  • Gongs
  • Tibetan or Himalayan singing bowls
  • Tuning forks
  • Cymbals
  • Quartz bowls
  • Monochords
  • Chrystal pyramids
  • Voice

Each instrument has a different physiological impact on the being, making each sound therapy session and its changing process uniquely beneficial.

What Are the Goals of Sound Therapy?

There are simple and straightforward goals behind the sound therapy sessions we offer at Aliya Native Americans. We target healing for Indigenous peoples and the challenges they and their communities face. Thus, our goals are outlined as:

  • Emotional healing
  • Trauma healing
  • Cultural engagement and pride
  • Stress and anxiety reduction
  • Improved sleep
  • Greater concentration and control of thoughts
  • Spiritual connection

By utilizing culturally meaningful sound healing instruments like drums, flutes, and chanting, we aim to help individuals feel a connection with their roots. Further, we are aware of the Native American traditional methods of sound therapy, such as in healing circles. We structure our programming to honor the traditions of our guests. Whereas the aim is to bring whole-community healing, we believe the benefits can touch individuals and then spread outwards.

What to Expect in Sound Therapy

It can be a bit nerve-wracking to begin your first sound therapy session. Although you might have experienced sound healing within your community, we understand following the process in a healing center may feel different and strange. Please be assured we make every effort to make the process feel safe, comfortable, and culturally relevant. Whether you’ll be attending an individual or group session, dress comfortably and bring whatever you need to relax. You might want a blanket, pillow, or yoga mat to help you get comfortable. You will spend time sitting or lying down in a state of comfort while you experience a sound bath. Throughout the session, your counselor will guide you in reflection. It’s okay if you feel sleepy—it’s a normal part of the process.

What Does Sound Therapy Help With?

Sound therapy is beneficial for a wide range of physical and mental issues. In short, there is no person that cannot find wellness improvements from the healing power of sound frequencies. Our focus at Aliya Native Americans is on substance addictions, mental illness, and overlapping conditions. Certainly, sound therapy helps individuals with these issues recover. However, it’s important to note we use an integrative healing approach at Aliya Health Group, combining traditional psychotherapy with holistic practices.

Sound Therapy for Substance Abuse

Substance abuse is a prevalent problem amongst Native Americans, with the highest rates of all people groups in America. Both alcohol use disorders and drug use disorders are disproportionately high amongst American Indians and Alaska Natives. When it comes to developing addictions, Native Americans face many environmental, cultural, and genetic risk factors. Historical trauma also plays a significant role in the development of substance abuse challenges. Sound therapy helps those overcoming addictions to find relaxation and restoration.

Sound Therapy for Mental Health Disorders

Additionally, Native Americans have high numbers of mental health disorders and mental illness symptoms without formal diagnosis. Sadly, many Indigenous people go without diagnoses and treatment due to barriers to care. When attending Aliya Native Americans, you’ll receive comprehensive mental health healing through traditional counseling, holistic treatment, and optional prescription medication.

What to Expect in Sound Therapy

Sound therapy is equally effective for those living with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • PTSD
  • Unresolved grief
  • Chronic pain or illness
  • Co-occurring disorders (e.g., addiction + mental health)

Its ability to address multiple dimensions of health makes it an ideal part of treatment for individuals with complex needs. Whether you’re dealing with trauma, mood disorders, or overlapping conditions, sound therapy offers non-invasive support that meets you where you are.

What Are the Benefits of Sound Therapy?

Without a doubt, there is much good to gain from sound therapy. Many studies have been conducted on its mental, physical, and emotional benefits.
